Previous Outbreaks of Ebola

List showing information on the previous outbreaks of the Ebola Virus.

  • 1976: Simultaneous outbreaks in Nzara, Sudan (now South Sudan) and Yambuku, Zaire (now DRC). 
  • 1995: A major outbreak in Kikwit, DRC, with 250 cases and 250 deaths.
  • 2000–2001: An outbreak in Gulu District, Uganda, caused by the Sudan virus.
  • 2007–2008: An outbreak in Bundibugyo District, Uganda, marking the first discovery of the Bundibugyo virus. 
  • 2012: Outbreaks in DRC (Isiro) and Uganda (Kibaale). 
  • 2014: An outbreak in Équateur Province, DRC, which was declared over in November 2014 after 66 cases and 49 deaths. 
  • 2014 -2016. Outbreak in West Africa, the largest Ebola disease outbreak to date, with more than 28,600 cases reported
  • 2017: A small outbreak in Bas-Uele Province, DRC, with 8 cases and 4 deaths.
  • 2020: An outbreak in Équateur Province, DRC, with 130 cases and 55 deaths.
  • 2021: Outbreaks in North Kivu, DRC (12 cases, 6 deaths) and N’Zérékoré, Guinea (23 cases, 12 deaths).
  • 2022: Outbreaks in Equateur Province, DRC (5 cases, 5 deaths) and North Kivu, DRC (1 case, 1 death).
  • 2023: A major outbreak in Mubende District, Uganda, with 164 cases and 55 deaths. 
  • 2025: An outbreak in Kasai Province, DRC, with 64 cases and 45 deaths. 
  • 2026: An outbreak in Ituri Province, DRC, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in May 2026

There currently is no vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola Virus.
